Stevensons

For nearly 100 years, the Stevenson Group has played a major role in developing New Zealand’s roading and infrastructure. Stevenson are a major player in the country’s construction industry, supplying aggregates and a very wide range of concrete-based building products. The group has strong roots in land-based businesses including mining and quarry management, agriculture and property.

In August 2008 Stevenson Group commenced the National Certificate in Business (Level 4) in partnership with NZIM Northern. The programme was customised to incorporate the “Stevenson DNA”, and to fit within the existing Stevenson Leadership Framework. The programme was designed to be the second of four levels in the development pathway and was also tailored to transition into the NZIM Diploma in Frontline Management (Level 5) which constitutes the third stage of the framework. With NZIM’s assistance, Stevenson have also incorporated coaches and peer-support meetings into the programme to ensure success throughout.

Participants are selected by the Stevenson Management Team after being identified as leaders or future leaders within the organisation that they would like to develop. The programme gives the participants the opportunity to build on their experiences and expertise whilst gaining an NZQA accredited qualification. The programme presents a unique opportunity for each participant to develop and grow themselves and their careers.

NZIM Northern and Stevenson Group are looking forward to the continued success of this programme and seeing many Stevenson Group employees from across all areas of the organisation succeed in gaining formal recognition of their effort and achievements.

Stevenson recognise that the development of our business depends largely on the development of our people. We found that while the technical competencies within the business were high, we also wanted to ensure a high level of leadership competencies. We invited a selection of Training Providers make proposals.

NZIM delivered a solid proposal and were willing to customise components of the course where possible, to make it as applicable as possible to Stevenson. The fact that upon successful completion of the course, participants came away with a portable recognised qualification that they couldtake further was also great.

The Company and the participants have found NZIM very easy to deal with, particularly the accessibility of the trainers and other NZIM staff. Participants have been very positive about the course although some have struggled with the tight deadlines while also managing their normal work duties. The course has involved a project that each participant has been applying to his or her business department. We look forward to seeing the positive impact that these projects will bring to the business.
