| BUSINESS CHALLENGE
This qualification has been developed through a partnership between NZIM and The Academy of Constructing Excellence NZ Ltd.
New Zealand companies are operating in an increasingly globalised marketplace, with record levels of world demand for infrastructure development. Through our research and international links, we are aware that other countries are achieving real value improvements of up to and beyond 15% savings in costs and in time, in similar busy markets through deployment of business excellence methods often encompassing ‘triple bottom line’ improvements, i.e. across economic (both time and cost), environmental and community indicators.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The NZIM Diploma of Managerial Excellence in Construction and Engineering is a new training course specifically for the industry’s up and coming project and business leaders. The course is aimed at individuals in the succession plan of New Zealand’s leading construction industry players. Contractors, consultants and clients, learning and developing together.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
The first semester of the course deals with business and strategy related topics, whilst the second semester covers project and operational aspects with an emphasis on integrating the supply chain and finishing with delivering the people skills necessary to lead change.
Semester 1 - A key part of the early course is the individual’s personality assessment (MBTI) and the use of that knowledge in interacting with others. It is critical for leaders to understand their own behaviour and the drivers of others. The course then moves on to general business strategy, how to develop strategy and provides tools for use back in the business. Financial management is covered as a fundamental part of business management. The candidate is introduced to a series of quality management tools, or ‘Tools for Excellence’, e.g. Six Sigma, Balanced Scorecard, CPI, Lean etc in preparation for a main module on managing change and performance improvement.
The module covers all aspects of performance measurement. The final module of the first semester covers Customer Relationship Management, bringing experts with a proven track record in our industry in from overseas. The semester ends with a dinner with guests from the Industry Advisory Group (IAP) and an outline of the second term and the candidates’ ‘project’.
Semester 2 - Supply Chain Management forms the topic for the next three modules, from a business perspective moving through to a project view with integrated teams and operations. The modules that follow will provide practical tools to improve project performance across the whole supply chain, including the client. The course closes with an industry led assessment via a panel from the IAP, NZIM and Academy assessors. Candidates will present their projects for assessment.
